If you buy only one Quell game, make it Memento, not Zen.In long, after Quell, Quell Reflect and the terrific Quell Memento, this is the fourth installment in the series. I am sad to report that Quell Zen does not live up to the high standard set by Memento.Zen has only a few more levels than Memento, but it is a substantially longer game. Levels requiring more than 30 moves to solve are the norm instead of the exception. The problem is, that more complexity and length alone do not equal more fun. This game again adds new mechanics to the series, but unfortunately ones I mostly did not enjoy. Many of them change the layout of the levels (arrows move rows of blocks, green bubbles leave trails of blocks), which I found very demanding\/frustrating to plan out in advance. I guess in this regard Zen is confirmation of the old adage that sometimes less is more. The difficulty varies wildly all through-out the game. It's not uncommon for open-ended levels with 40+ step solutions to occur in proximity of 7 step linear levels, even quite early on.They did improve the start-up loading time compared to Memento, but virtually everything else is a downgrade in my opinion. I didn't like the new asian theme and aesthetic - Memento is easily better looking. The "story" was about as useless as in Memento, but now the competent voice acting is replaced with badly-written letters. They start out unrealistic and end up awkward and horribly clich\u00e9d. Memento had a certain charm and consistent style in its presentation, which seems all but lost in Zen.Unless you found Memento way too easy, Zen is in every regard an inferior game. A few levels are undoubtedly quite smart, the majority is decent if uninspired, but sadly there are quite a few bad apples which are just tedious and frustrating. Still, over-all there's more good than bad, and if I hadn't liked Memento so much, I probably wouldn't be as harsh on Zen. If you like the series, pick it up on sale. Personally I wouldn't pay full price.. I was hooked on the previous Quell games (Quell, Reflections, and Memento), but this is the best one ever! It's challenging, it's fun, and it's utterly addictive. (BTW, I'm a retiree, and this game is perfect for warding off Alzheimer's!) Get it! Play it! Love it!. This latest instalment in the Quell series of logic puzzles is as satisfying and pleasurable as its predecessors. As before you are challenged to devise a means of navigating a water droplet around the artfully designed areas, avoiding tricks and traps and defeating obstacles whilst collecting all the pearls as you go. Sometimes you just have to collect all the pearls, sometimes switch lights on, or enable a multiple grid of light beams that hits all available targets simultaneously, sometimes all of the above. After the early tutorial levels the difficulty increases and then the fun begins. So many times you avoid all traps, devise a logical route and method to collect all pearls, solve all problems, achieve all goals and then you discover that you are just one move short of a perfect score, teasing you, if you are so inclined, to peruse every move you have made to try and find some way of shaving just one move off your solution. If your solution is, for instance, 53 moves and your perfect target is 52 moves, well, some time may pass as you try to find that elusive one move reduction.Add to this the challenge of discovering all the hidden jewels in each level, sometimes they are quite hard to find as well as seemingly inaccessible, can you find a way of getting to them? There are levels hidden within levels, can you find and solve all of them?Complete each section and, in a series of letters, a touching story unfolds. This together with the accompaniment of a relaxing soundtrack enables a pleasant immersion as you progress. This is the sort of game that you might start to play on a rainy Sunday afternoon, the next thing you know it is the early hours of the morning and the birds are singing.Excellent game, can't wait for the next one.. There are precious few game series that live to see a 4th installment - especially if the genre is "puzzle". It's also difficult to steadily improve quality as the series goes forward. To have a 4th installment that is massively superior to the (already good) predecessors is really exceptional - and this is what Quell Zen managed to achieve. The basic Quell formula is simple. You're guiding a raindrop with momentum - if you push it right, it will travel right until it hits something (or travel forever if it doesn't hit anything :) Initially, you need to collect pearls to complete levels, but as the game goes on, there are more types of objectives. Some of the levels are challenging to figure out, but the real challenge is getting the perfect score (ie. lowest number of moves). If more challenge is wanted, you can look for the hidden jewel on the level. Some levels also have sublevels, also for additional challenge. And finally, you can try to beat the perfect score - there are a handful in every quell game where this is possible. As you see, Quell goes from the relaxing casual to the mid-heavy challenging, depending on how you approach. The simple but pleasing visual style is unobtrusive, while the gorgeous soundtrack infuses the game with a degree of melancholy. This is where Quell Zen scores big - combining the ever more refined atmosphere of the first three games with a Japanese theme is a total hit, when I saw the game, I just wondered how the creators didn't think of this earlier. Ah yeah, and doubling the number of levels also did the game some good :)Complete with a simple but heartfully told little story, Quell Zen is one of the most atmospheric puzzle games I've ever played, with a difficulty level matching my capabilities and attention span well. As the crowning glory of an already excellent series, this game is certainly recommended.. Hours and hours of head-scratching and brow furrowing Great thinking game.. i usually dont like puzzle games BUT i really like the quell series. i played the other ones on android, i had no idea about the zen one or they were on steam. so i was pleasantly surprised to find this on sale yesterday!a very calm and soothing experience. i love when my brain clicks and i find the correct solition. the difficulty curve is nice and there are challenging secrets too, whats not to like?tldr: it feels like playing an elaborate game of chess against yourself. Peaceful and lovely. Like all its predecessors, it's good for playing when you want something low-frustration; I tend to play it when I'm trying to wind down before bed.. If you playied other Quell games than you know what to exspect. What I didnt exspect is that they made the puzzles harder and thats a good thing, plenty of content for the price tag.. Quell Zen is the fourth and latest part of the Quell Puzzle Games. While the other 3 Quell games (Quell, Quell Reflect and Quell Memento) have nearly the same puzzle mechanic in the whole game, with improving difficulty the more you progress, Quell Zen is bit different. This game has 4 Stages with 4 unique levels and sometimes a secret hidden level. Every of those stage has a unique puzzle mechanic and in total 13 different chapters.Your goal is to collect with your blue water bubble all the pearls in the level. You earn for every perfect level and for the hidden gems coins. With these coins you can buy solutions for the perfect set of moves for the level or the location of the secret level entrys or hidden gems. (this has nothing to do with microtransctions!)After finishing first the other 3 games and while playing the fourth, I am writing this review to absolutely recommend this series of puzzle games to you.
